Rise of the Decorators & Women Designers

The Rise of the Decorator was first seen in the 1925 L'Exposition Unternationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriel Modernes also known as the World's Fair in Paris. During this exposition, architects, artists, and designers developed two distinct categories which consist of functionalists and decorators. Ensembliers and decorator is "one who creates an ensemble, choses objects, combines objects and in doing so makes aesthetic choices" while functionalists "focused on function, form theory and did not promote the excessive use of accessories or furnisher." The Period of Art Deco & Industrial Design

  The Art Deco Era is a sub category of the modernist movement that originated in France but became popular in the United State after World War I. This era was a brief period between the two world wars and was a time of celebration, also known as the roaring 20s.  With the idea of this time being celebrating and progressing economically in the United States, design masses had a luxurious style and extensive accessories. This included exotic materials, hand crafts furniture, geometric patterns, ivory flooring, shiny surfaces, and the use of dark lacquer wood. While luxurious taste was a big idea of this era, functionalism was still in play with have nonordimatrional spaces. Emergence of Modernism

 Emergence of Modernism Era occurred during the 1900- 1950s which was during the beginning of World War I and the end of World War II. As it can be known, the economy during this time was suffering greatly from the wars happening. Therefore, in order to achieve a new design era, the material used was inexpensive and not high quality. Additionally, designers focused on the mass of design with having furniture be made for an average person with low to mid income.  Internationalism and modernism was a very purposeful and aggressive movement that focuses on the futuristic of design rather than the pervious historical designs. This movement is the heart of the Industrial Revolution because of machinery basically being the inspiration for this era in design. Lastly, it is very important to note functionalism being a key idea in the design process.
